It’s Up to YOU To Know What’s In Your Products
Did you know that
FDA regulations on the cosmetics industry have not changed since 1938? Shocking, right?!
This means that millions of products used by consumers every day – from lipstick to deodorant to baby lotion – are not regulated for safety by the government, but are instead self-regulated by the cosmetics industry itself – a bit like the wolf guarding the hen house, right? This self-regulation has resulted in questionable product claims and standards, including such shocking ingredients as
formaldehyde in baby shampoo,
mercury in face cream and
lead in lipstick.
According to the
Washington Post, “Compared to its authority to oversee pharmaceuticals and foods, the FDA is virtually toothless when it comes to regulating cosmetics. It has no power to review products before they go on the market.”
Though the government is taking steps to increase their authority over the consumer product industry – thanks in large part to pressure from consumer advocate groups like
Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and exponentially stronger regulations in other countries, such as the European Union – they are far from making any big changes. So, until those regulations are put in to place,
it is up to you – the consumer – to know about your products and how they can affect your health and the health of your family.
